"Latin Grufti" Project

Launched in 2020, Latin Grufti is a multi-artistic project that engages with the broad spectrum of the Gothic aesthetic.

It has been the subject of both an undergraduate thesis (2022) and a master's thesis (2025). The former explored video production during the COVID-19 pandemic and the project's evolution from "video art" into a solo musical endeavor, culminating in the release of an album accompanied by music videos. The project was rooted in my experience with a dance group called X Fusion Experience, which performed at Gothic subculture events in Curitiba. Consequently, the videos generally consisted of footage of myself performing specific actions set to original music I composed using audio software—a departure from the practice of using existing foreign tracks, as had been the case with the dance group. With the exception of a few shots captured by a relative, I carried out all other aspects of the work myself.

In the dissertation titled *Latin Grufti: The Gothic as Trigger and Target in the Intersection of Visual Arts and Music*, I traced a possible history of the term "Gothic," spanning from the invasion of the Roman Empire by Goth peoples from Eastern Europe in the 5th century, through 18th-century Gothic literature, the Gothic subculture that emerged in the 1980s, and contemporary art curatorial projects from the 1980s to 2013, to the resurgence of the Gothic during the 2020 pandemic.
